Storm in Paradise: Hurricane Season in Puerto Vallarta

In Puerto Vallarta, the rainy season causes a significant drop in tourists, which is why it is known as "low season", which is concentrated between the months of June and mid-October.

Similarly, the hurricane season takes place during the hot summer months, so it is very common for the rains and intense storms to increase during the months of August and September. This should not be a reason to prevent you from visiting the city this season. There are some areas that, due to their geographic location, are generally not affected by storm destruction.

Puerto Vallarta is perfectly situated on the Pacific coast, in an area that is generally protected from the fury of powerful storms. Thanks to the shape of the bay and the mountainous area of the Sierra Madre, they help prevent the impact of storms. Many of the storms that seek to make landfall quickly deviate as they approach this area.

Most of the precipitation falls in September, with a monthly average of 340 mm (13,4 in) of rain.

Puerto Vallarta may receive tropical storm warnings, which are occasionally upgraded to hurricane warnings. We have only been hit 3 times during the Puerto Vallarta hurricane season in the last 50 years:

  • Hurricane Kenna in 2002
  • Hurricane Lily in 1971
  • Hurricane Nora in 2021
