Surfing, the art of dancing with the waves

When we talk about surfing, we talk about an art on the waves, it is essentially defined as a water sport, which consists of sliding on a board on the waves. It seems simple, but the basis of this sport is to stay on our board as long as possible.

In this way we can stand up on the board, make walls or perform different maneuvers, turns or tricks supported by the force of the waves.

Variants and types when surfing

Surfing itself has variations within the modality. Classic surfing is based on paddling a wave, standing up and performing a series of turns, maneuvers and tricks, thanks to the push of the wave itself.

It is a sport in constant evolution and gaining followers. There are three categories depending on the type of surfboard we use:

Surfboards

short board

Tables that would go from 5 feet to 7 feet. It is based on performing maneuvers and sudden turns on the board in waves of different sizes and profiles.

They are short boards that allow greater control over the wave, go under the waves doing the duck and perform more difficult tricks.

Surfing in Puerto Vallarta

fun board

Intermediate boards ranging from 7ft to 9ft. They mix the characteristics of shortboards with those of longboards, making them perfect to start surfing in a surf course.

Longboard

Boards that exceed 9 feet. In these tables the maneuvers are quite different, since variations of the position of the feet are made and not only of the weight of our body. In this way we ourselves walk on the board and perform different tricks. The type of wave tends to be long, as well as having a medium size and not being very vertical.

Places to Surf

There are several surf spots in Puerto Vallarta and Nayarit, where there are almost a dozen offshore breaks for intermediate and advanced surfers, some of which are best accessed by boat.

  • The Anclote
It is a fairly exposed reef that has a very constant swell and works all year round. It works best with northwesterly offshore winds. Clean swells prevail and the best swell direction is from the southwest. When it works here, it can get crowded
  • Sayulita
The waves range from good to great, but what matters most is the vibe, and in Sayulita it was the vibe that brought fame. Visitors and locals are a picturesque and colorful group on the beach and on the waves.

In the town the waves start from the right passing through the town beach and end a little north to the left. They are all challenging when the tide is high, and great to learn when the tide is low. Choose between a short or long board, with a smooth surface or in the shape of a fish. The choice is yours.
  • Puerto Vallarta Rivermouth
In Jalisco there is a protected river break that has inconsistent waves. Winter is the optimal time of year to surf here. It works best with offshore easterly winds. Most of the surf comes from swells and the best surf direction is from the northwest. The river break offers both left and right waves. Sometimes crowded.
  • Quimixto
It is a fairly exposed beach break that has a constant swell. Summer offers optimal conditions for surfing. The sea winds are from the south. The swells are more frequent than the wind ones and the optimum wave angle is from the west southwest. Beach breaks offer lefts and rights. A fairly popular wave that can get crowded at times. Watch out for breaks, they make surfing here dangerous.
